Savannah Road Ladies at The Dairy Queen, Lewes, De.
Three sisters stop off at the Dairy Queen in Lewes Beach….on Savannah Road. And no, it is Lewes Beach…on Savannah Road. These Ladies are sadly disappearing, the blue is replaced, no longer there, but I have lots of photos of them from the 80s and 90-s…A couple more glazes to apply but you get the gist of them. My great-great grandmothers (Kate Burton Showell) brother, Alfred Lee Burton was the first mayor of Lewes….so yes…. Traditions here in Sussex County.
Working towards creating more works for exhibit with a production line of Plein Air informed but studio works. In plein air, I attempt to record reality, but in studio works, I can use my photographs, sketches, plein air on site sketches, bump color, change time of day, and think more about creating the story, altering elements to create stronger compositions. In color, I am thinking of Hensche, and the Cape Ann artists movement. Workboats from Rock Hall, Maryland, and The Morning Sentinel, a cormorant that hangs out on the Lewes Harbor piling across from the Overfalls. Playing with complements and color balancing. Color and texture weaving in these, and I could see further abstraction…on to the next one.
Today I’m working on an under painting of the house that once stood at the T of New Road, and the Flower Farm that stood on the north side of New Road. I would drive by these on my early mornings off to AP Summer Art and Art History training in Lewes. One morning I shot a lot of digital images, and filed them away waiting for this day. Both are gone now, the house demolished, the field lies fallow, and I no longer teach AP Art or Art History. Plein air has informed much of my studio work. My zillion image folders filed away for informing my work. The fields will soon contain a row of sun flowers and the zinnia fields which used to sell at the farmers market, and fill the restaurant tables of Lewes and Rehoboth. Getting there….. The Flower Farmers on New Road Lewes, Delaware. 11x14 inches, smaller than my comfort zone. The tradition showing farm laborers such as tulip field workers in Mount Vernon, Washington, by Alfred Currier, Van Gogh, the sower, … Now farmers mostly on tractor or combine….
