Two years ago this next April I was newly retired, and spent the month with daughter Sarah and Stephyn Ackermann and their boys in Stanwood. I arrived still in time to see the Tundra swans who winter in the potato fields of Skagitt Valley. I like taking the Pioneer highway north to Conway and the back roads to Mt. Vernon rather than the fast I-5, as you see the old barns of the Tulip fields, and the fields of muddy swans. Farmers place plastic eagles at intervals to scare the swans away from uprooting the winter grain grasses, but the swans are undeterred. I’ve photographed them two years ago with my cell phone and iPad, but couldn’t get close enough for detail, and there are no pull over sites to park and stalk them. My son in law loves these mud birds, and this year with his new i-phone in hand, he followed up on our quest to get some shots to work from. I used water mixable oils, and wax medium glazes.
